How To Treat Recurring Bacterial Vaginal Infections?
I have recurrent vaginal bacterial infections. Often times when I medicate for the infection, I get a yeast infection...back and forth. What can I do to prevent these bacterial infections? I have just one partner (my husband). It seems that when we do have intercourse, I rapidly develop an infection. My symptoms are mild--discomfort in lower left side of pelvis (always the same pin point location), and annoying discharge. I go in for a pap smear when I start to feel fluish--or if I don t know if it s yeast or bacterial. I ve tested positive for both yeast and bacteria at the same time which I found odd. I had endometrial ablation about 7 years ago, so I don t get a period, but periodic spotting. I m 48.
If you have recurrent yeast infection, you may need to be on prophylactic/long term medications for a few months. In women prone to these infections, prolonged use of topical or oral antifungals may help.
In addition, you may want to consider being screened for any conditions that may be affecting your immune system and increasing your risk for infection eg diabetes, infections, review of medications
Your doctor can assess your immune status and also provide the long term meds for you.
I hope this helps
