How To Treat Restlessness In The Arms And Legs?

I am 69 years old and a R.N. I recently have been unable to sleep due to the constant need to move and stretch my arms and legs. Is this RLS? Why are my arms also involved, especially the wrists? This can go on for 6 hours or more with no sleep. I have never felt anything this compelling before. What is it?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

In fact what you says typically looks to be restless leg syndrome. What you said is very right that why arms are involved. So yes the names is fro legs, and legs are commonly involved however arms involvement is not uncommon and upto half of the people do have arms involvement. The treatment is generally with ropinirole, opiod, or benzodiazipines. It is sometimes associated with iron deficiency , uremia, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, copd, so these diseases should always be checked for.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
