How To Treat Sensation Of Blockage In Upper Chest?

I have a sensation of a blockage in my upper chest (could be oesophagus not sure) not burning just a sense that something does not clear. However I had this for the first time last night and made sleep difficult. Eventually I did sleep and it was better on waking. Now it has re-started this evening just as I am thinking of going to bed - not really been aware of it during the day. What should I do with these symptoms?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

As per my clinical experience, particular episode of blockage sensation in upper chest at night indicates reflux of stomach acid most likely as in case of GERD, hiatus hernia or else. My guidelines at present for better recovery:
- Keep the head end of bed elevated for 30 degree when resting
- Avoid spices, non veg, junk foods, dairy fat at dinner time
- Take dinner before 3 hours of sleep time
- Make a habit of regular evening walk after meals
- Keep body weight under control
- Regular exercises, YOGA
- meditations and deep breathing exercises
- Intake of proton pump inhibitor as Omeprazole or Dexrabeprazole with sips of water before slipping

Should discuss need of any work up as upper GI endoscopy or else
during follow up consulting with your doc.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
