How To Treat Severe Chest Pain While Breathing Caused Due To Fractured Ribs?

I was very sick with a horrible cough and then my left side hurt so bad I went to dr and he gave me meds to get over my infection. I kept telling him how it hurt to breathe and how sore I was. He sent me for X-ray and here I had 2 fractured ribs. I m still in pain 2 weeks later and he s sending me for a mammogram and ct scan. Now yesterday I had little more pain and I felt a lump on my rib in the area of where I fractured my ribs. Should I call him? The test aren t till later next week. What should I do?

Hi,

I am not aware of the mechanism of the fracture. Any history of trauma? or was it spontaneous? Spontaneous fracture will need further evaluation for underlying cause.

If you have no fever or significant cough now, all that we need now is analgesic support till the fracture is healed. Rib fracture usually do not need any surgical fixation. You can take paracetamol 3 times a day after food (ibuprofen if sever pain) for pain relief. Take cough suppressants like dextromethorphan 2-3 times ad day for any dry cough. Your doctor will guide you further.

If doctor had not mentioned about a lump in x ray, you need not worry about that now, as fracture itself can cause a lumpy feeling there. No need to go back immediately.
