How To Treat Severe Pain In Hips, legs And Feet Due To Osteoporosis?

Hello my name is Debra DeLaTorre, I am 45 years old. I have had colon cancer , went threw chemo and radiation treatments. I now have a colostomy. Good news my cancer is GONE but now my body seems to be falling apart. I was diagnosed with ostheoperosis after breaking my femur bone walking. The bone density scan read -2.75 I am taking hormones , vitamins and I bought a stationary bike that I ride in 10 min intervals at least once a day. My question is ... I am in ALOT of pain ! It hurts in my hips, backs of my legs and sometimes in my feet. Does ostheoperosis hurt and if so what can I take besides ibuprofen that my doctor keeps prescribing me?

Hi,

Severe pain in hips, legs and feet in a patient with osteoporosis can be due to nerve compression at lower back cause by compression of spinal cord by slipped disc or compression fracture of vertebrae which can occur due to osteoporosis.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a case:
Get Vitamin D, calcium, calcitonin levels and get corrected if any deficiency.
MRI of the lower spine to find out the position of the vertebrae and compression of spinal cord. If found then you need an opinion of a Neurosurgeon, Physiotherapist and so on.
Due to colostomy for colon cancer, there are deficiencies of many nutrients which needs to be investigated and corrected.
Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy also have lots of complications and needed to be investigated for and corrected if possible.
Till then symptomatic treatment, back support can help for the pain that you have.
Specific treatment in the form of medicines and particularly surgery may be needed and be ready and accept that.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
