How To Treat Sharp Knee Pain Caused After Injury?

hi there I am a bartender and yesterday while working I slammed my kneecap accidentally into the corner of the ice machine which almost brought me to the ground and had to stand for about 3 minutes in order not to cry. since then I cannot bend my knee without extreme pain on my kneecap there is no bruising or swelling so I don t know if it s something I need to go to the doctor for. I broke my other kneecap some years back and my knee swelled instantly to the size of a basketball. So I am wondering, being there is no bruising or swelling if it s something I should have looked at or not I cannot touch it or move it because the pain sends me through the roof but I do not want to go to the doctor if its not broke or fractured.

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sharp knee pain caused after injury. Well the symptoms you mention in query can occur due to may reasons like anterior cruciate ligament injury ,torn meniscus , knee bursitis , patellar tendinitis , knee cap dislocation , fracture , hematoma and rheumatoid arthritis . But in your case it seems to me the symptoms are probably due to ligament injury or knee cap injury . For now apply cold compresses for first 48 hours and then apply warm compresses to knee , take proper rest , drink plenty of water and elevate your legs while lying down . Doctor may also recommend physical therapy . I would suggest you to consult orthopedic surgeon for proper diagnosis . Doctor may order X-ray , CT scans , ultrasound , MRI and blood tests to confirm the diagnosis . Doctor may recommend muscle strengthening exercises along with injection of a corticosteroid drug , orthodox MR and surgery like arthroscopic surgery in severe damage .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
