How To Treat Speech Difficulties While On Ativan For Anxiety?

Hello, I am a nurse working in a rehab/long term care facility. I have a lady who had a stroke 3 months ago. She can t use language well at all or point to where she hurts. She does follow conversation and is extremely frustrated by her inability to use language to communicate. She will want to say something and then totally irrelavant words come out and she kinda rolls her eyes and looks crestfallen. She has Ativan and Oxycondone on her PRN medication list. I hesitate to give her oxy without clear evidence that she is actually in pain. Regarding Ativan, beyond decreasing acute anxeity does it help the brain to heal, like a calm brain can heal better? Or does it just make for a calmer patient? Thank you,

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It would calm her emotionally and help relax her but would not assist in healing.

She would need to continue her therapy to hopefully regain some of her language function.

I hope this helps
