Hello and welcome to HCM, Stones on ultrasound abdomen can be in ureter or in the kidney. Management of stones in urinary tract -ureter or in the kidney depends on the size of the stone and its probable location. Stones which are less than 3 mm in size are managed conservatively- with medications and other measures to remove then e.g. drinking plenty of water, lithotripsy etc. If more than 6 mm, surgical measures are required which depend on the location of the stone. The stones which are present on lower side of ureter are removed with the help of basket retrieval. Those which are located in the kidney have to be managed by more extensive procedures. Stones between 3-6 mm are in borderline zone and are managed on the basis of its location.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
