How To Treat Swelling And Discoloration Of Ankle Due To An Injury?

I hurt my ankle about two years ago. I was thrown off and ATV. After the accident I couldn't really walk on the ankle and it was very swollen and black and blue. I didn't go to a doctor untial about two months later. My ankle is now acting up (It gets sore more often then before) and starting to pop quite a bit when I walk up and down stairs, for example. I never actually had an x-ray done on the ankle. Is there anything i should do to maybe help my ankle?
