How To Treat Swelling And Needles Pain In Hands?

I have a feeling of pins and needles/numbness and swelling in both hands and recently have noticed a shooting pain (that I would describe as pulsing shocks) from my left wrist to my elbow. It only lasts for a few seconds but is quite severe. Are these two related and should i go to my own doctor or will this go away. I've had the pins and needles for about a year now.
