14 year old boy who has a swollen lymph node on his right. He has had it for about 2 months maybe a little longer. We have been to his Dr twice and they are not real concerned about it. It is bigger and has started trimming red. I want to know am I over reacting or should I seek a second opinion. It is bothering him now.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Red and painful swollen lymph node in a 14 year old child commonly occur due to some 1. infection either Bacterial ( by staphylococcus/ streptococcus, tuberculosis), viral like Epstein- Barr virus causing infectious mononucleosis, Fungal infection, Parasitic like Toxoplasmosis .
2. tumour like Non- Hodgkin lymphoma, metastasis.
3. unknown etiology- Kawasaki disease.
4. Autoimmune cause- SLE.
So, you should consult a physician for his physical examination and other investigations like Total blood count, blood culture, FNAC& biopsy of lymph node and also Tuberculin test and chest X- ray. Doctor will recommend you treatment according to cause. If, Abcess developed then need to be drained by a surgeon.
Take care of him, bye.
