How To Treat The Black Spot On My Sons Eye?

My 12 year old son just had his yearly eye exam by the same doctor that he has seen for 7 years. He found a spot on the back of my son s eye that has never been there before. He said that he has seen thousands of freckles and this did not look like a freckle to him. He has not referred him to a specialist but wants to do a few teat in his office. What are your recommendations and what could this be. We have always been told that my son s eyes are healthy but he is far sighted +7.50 and +7.25 prescription.
