Hi,I am Dr. Prabhakar Koregol (Cardiologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Several months ago I had en episode of rapid heart rate, it lasted about 30 minutes. Next day I conslted my internist and he prescribed a 24 hour heart monitor and a stres stest. nothing unusual was found. Last week I had other episode of rapid heart rate lasting about 20 minutes. My question is: next month we pan to go to Colorado to hike in the mountains at about 10,000 feet. When we hike we usually are in the wilderness, what should I do if I experience another episode of rapid heart rate. I am 85 years old and excellent physical shape. Thanks for your reply,Kurt Moedritzer
You have had tachicardia episodes which are not frequent, so it wasn't detected during holter monitoring. You didn't faint and if there weren't presyncope and you didn't have dizziness, it is a good sign, you don't have hemodynamic disturbances during tachicardia. It is self limitating, it is quite benign. There can be two options; 1.maybe you discuss with your internist the possibility to take low dose beta blocker to protect from arrhythmias 2. You can do vagal maneuvers if you have arrhythmia, such as caughing, holding breath. It helps in some kind of tachicardias
Wishing you good health
