How To Treat The Skin Growing Over The Plastic Backing Of The Earring?

I put a plastic backing onto a good earring to secure it so it wouldn t come off my ear. Now I think skin from the back of my ear has grown over part of the plastic back, as I cannot get it off the earring post. Neither can I pull it through. It is a good diamond earring so what can I do to get it off?
