How To Treat Tinnitus Despite Taking Elavil And Xanax?

Is it true that there is no cure for tinnitus? I ve had it for as long as I can remember. Went to ENT doctor, had MRI done, which was normal. I m getting hearing aids due to hearing loss, but they won t treat or stop the constant noise. What about acupuncture? I m taking Elavil and Xanax, which help with sleep, but not ringing. Elavil is 25 mg, Xanax is 0.5 mg. I ve read that sometimes these meds help. I m a registered nurse and have researched everything I can find, to no avail.

I would say tinnitus is treatable,but not curable.Some of the causes of tinnitus can be vascular like atherosclerotic vessel disease,glomus tumors,palatal myoclonus,idiopathic (cause is not known).Investigations relevant to tinnitus include examination of ear, audiometry,mri brain,psychiatry evaluation.This helps to rule out some of the major causes of tinnitus.The treatment options include tinnitus masking devices,anxiolytics,antidepressants.This is a field undergoing lot of research now a days.You can log on to american tinnitus association(www.ata.org) to know about tinnitus research.So far acupuncture is not found helpful in tinnitus
