How To Treat White Skin Patches?

I have round white patches on my bikini line/upper thigh. They showed up about 2 months ago, and don t seem to get worse, but also don t go away. What could be the cause, and how do I get rod of them? I am a healthy 27 year old female. 5 11 and 150 lbs.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

White patches could be either post inflammatory hypopigmentation (PIH) or they could be vitiligo. I suggest you to kindly visit a dermatologist in your region for confirmation. Clinical examination is usually sufficient to differentiate between the two. Vitiligo is milk white due to complete absence of pigment whereas PIH is dirty white or off-white due to decrease rather than total absence of pigment. If I was the treating doctor I would suggest you to apply tacrolimus ointment, twice daily, over the white patches of PIH. For vitiligo I would like to also add once a day application of a topical steroid like fluticasone propionate 0.05% in addition to once daily application of tacrolimus .

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
