How To Withdraw Salipax?

Hi, I have been taking Salipax for sometime now and do not know how to stop. If I ever don t take it for 2 days, I start feeling anxious, nervous and moody. However, I am always tired and always look for more sleep everyday. Can you please advise what I should do.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Salipax contains fluoxetine which belongs to the class of medications known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI) antidepressant is used to treat major depressive disorder, bulimia nervosa or eating disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder and panic disorder. Withdrawal symptoms usually come on 5 days of stopping Salipax and generally last for up to 6 weeks. Some people have severe withdrawal symptoms that last for several months or more. Withdrawal symptoms irritability, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, headache, nightmares, depression etc.

Discontinuing an antidepressant usually involves reducing your dose in increments, allowing 2-6 weeks or longer between dose reductions. Your doctor can instruct you in tapering your dose and prescribe the appropriate dosage pills. A person taking 20 mg Salipax, for example, would be advised to go down to 15 mg for one week, then step down to 10 mg and so on.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
