Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi I have been taking metoprolol tartrate for high blood pressure believed to be caused by anxiety. The side effects are so bad I can barely function. Very sick to my stomach( I can t eat much because of stomach pain), tiredness, and severe insomnia. I have only taken 125mg total in 3 days(25mg twice a day), I was wondering if I can just stop taking it or do I need to be weaned off of it? Thank you.
We advise not to stop beta-blocker drugs (Metoprolol) suddenly as this can lead to a beta-blocker rebound phenomenon which may cause heart problem. This occurs only after chronic i.e. prolonged use of beta blockers.
Stopping after 2 days doesn't cause rebound phenomenon so you can stop it abruptly. However, always do such things with your doctor's advice.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mahboob Ur Rahman,
