How Treat A Swollen Toe That Is Red, Hot, And Throbbing?

My sons toe is swollen, red, hot, and throbbing. It has been bothering him for about a week and it seems to have gotten worse in the last 2 days. There doesn t seem to be any injury (scrape, cut, etc) and his toenail seems fine. Have tried soaking it in epsom salts but only gave temporary relief. Any suggestions?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read carefully your query and understand your concern.

The symptoms of your son seem to paronychia.
A paronychia is an infection of the finger that involves the tissue at the edges of the fingernail.
This is a very common bacterial infection.
I suggest using antibiotic cream for local application such as Neosporin cream.
I also suggest using anti inflammatory medications such as Acetaminophen to relieve the pain.

Hope my answer was helpful.

If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Kind regards!
