Hypnic Jerks Due To Misdiagnosis Of Thyrotoxicosis. On Clonazepam, Throxin, Melatonin. Difficulty In Sleeping, Fatigue. Advice

I have suffered with hypnic jerks for nine years now due to prolonged miss diagnosis of thyrotoxicosis. I have been told that there is no cure and that l will have to take anti-convulsive drugs for the rest of my life. I am taking clonazepam three times a day, thyroxin twice a day as well as melatonin at night. My GP is useless and l rarelyo manange more than two to three hours sleep at night before the hipnic jerks kick in so as a result l suffer chronic fatigue during the day I used to be a lecturer but had to stop teaching because of this condition.

Hello,
This is the commonest misdiagnosis. Hypnic jerks will not have the preceeding spikes in EEG and careful clinical history elicitation will reveal its occurrence only at night.
The cause for hynic jerks can’t be located. But hypnic jerks which wakes you up can make you nervous about going to sleep, which may produce another jerk, leading to insomnia and sleepless anxious nights.
Treatment:
A routine sleep hygiene
Easily digestable food in the diet
Vitamin deficiencies to be rectified
No exercise at night
Avoid smoking or drinking coffee or alcohol
Meditation, yoga and a positive approach
A mind relaxing melodious songs in the dark or anything similar to that.
Finally if needed sleep inducing tabs after consulting the Dr.
