I have been under the care of a endocrinologist for a little over two years for hyperthyroidism and Graves Disease. He has had me on different doses of Methimazole for the entire two years, which has done me well. I met w/a professor of endo yesterday and he insists that I STOP the medication because he says Methimazole is only supposed to be used for two years and that after two years it can have horrible effects on the body...., ie. "your skin could fall off." Now, of course, that scared me to death, but in searching the web a little, I have not found any information like that. Nothing. He says that if my thyroid is going to be better, it would have been better by now. Also, that if I relapse back to hyperthyroidism that he would have me do radiation. That is something I HAVE found info on. It is mostly negative, ie. eyes bulging, etc. I am confused. Is methimazole geared for only a two year span and DOES IT HAVE SUCH HORRIBLE EFFECTS ON THE BODY AFTER THAT TWO YEAR PERIOD??? I was comfortable in the fact I may have to take methimazole for the rest of my life (I am 49), but now I am so confused.
