I have diabetes LADA 1 which was diagnosed 10 years ago and I have been taking Venlafaxine (Effexor) 4x 150mg capsules every morning for the last 4 / 5 years. Yes I did put on quite a bit of weight but my Psychiatrist asked me if I was feeling better mentally and since I was no longer having night terrors from the PTSD as well as was no longer self-harming and ending up in hospital psych. ward due to my second diagnosis of having BPD, I think the affect of the medication far outweighed the importance of being slim.
However the question / concern I have is if and how Effexor is linked with DKA? The reason I ask is that I have been hospitalized 3x times in the last 4 years with DKA and also whether hormones or menstrual cycle can also be a factor as it that time of month; even though I am on such a high dosage of Effexor, I tend to get very emotional, angry and unreasonable [nothing like before taking Effexor of course] as well as it is also at this time that I have experienced all 3x DKA episodes. Is this purely coincidental or is it linked? The reason I ask is that I can certainly not continue to have the DKA episodes where I end up hospitalized with drip, postassium, gucogen, insulin, cafetor etc. for a few days... each admission is worse than the time before... However I am extremely afraid of going off my medication [weaning or otherwise] as I almost lost my husband, my daughter and my life due to my very fragile but erratic psychological state.
If you could assist me by providing factual information and real advice it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Melissa.
