I strained my neck at work. Felt like a tweak--a moment of pain which subsided into a simple soreness along the length of the back of the neck--a bit like I slept wrong and "kinked" my neck. Over the course of the next two days, the area (right side, back of neck) slowly swelled until I had a very prominent, round 3-4" diameter protrusion between spine and right ear at base of skull. Very, very painful to move or touch.
Had it checked at an Urgent Care, x-ray was negative for bone issues, and was prescribed pills for pain, inflammation and muscle relaxer. Did not help. Follow-up with same Dr gave referral to Ortho specialist, who quickly ordered MRI. In follow-up to MRI, Dr took sample with syringe, and eventually cut into mass. A great pocket of pus, and another smaller pocket of blood--hematoma.
On the subsequent follow-up a lab report from the pus sample indicated strep, staph and "other" the Dr didn't mention. The wound was still seeping pus and blood. He extended my antibiotics.
After a 5 day course of strong antibiotics I seem to be on the mend. With the infection under control, and it's associated pain all but gone, I can still feel that original neck soreness--the "kink" that started all of this--but it seems to be loosening up and healing as well.
My question is this: how can a simple neck strain result in a massive strep/staph infection? I'm trying to understand the causal relationship. I can't believe it's a coincidence due to the exact location and timing.
Thanks for your patience reading this and in advance for your answer.
