I was diagnosed yesterday morning with severe bronchitis. I had every symptom of pneumonia (I've had it before, but this time I was much sicker) including a horrible, deep pneumonia sounding cough with lots of mucous, high fever, chills, sweating, lack of appetite. it was difficult to breath from all the crackling and congestion in my upper chest, bronchial area. i almost feel like it is congested into my throat. I had waited a few days thinking the high fever would help fight the obvious infection I had, but I was (and still am) having trouble breathing from all the mucous in my bronchial tubes. When my doctor ran my blood work it was normal, and he said my lungs looked clear, so all he gave me was a steroid shot and a cough suppressant. The breathing test the nurse gave me would end with lots of crackling and I would start coughing. The nurse was going to shoot a steroid into my bronchial area, but I refused it until the doctor ran other tests, because I take attenolol due to my heart having a tendency to speed, which it has been doing a lot lately, even before I got sick. He sent me home with a prescription for Augmentin to take if I wasn't improved by Saturday. I have been taking Robitussin D, which allows me to cough up the mucous, but ut seems neverending, so except for a little energy boost this morning, i am feeling worse and coughing more. I can't lie down to sleep, and now can't sleep at all. Too congested in my chest. Do you think I should get the prescription filled now or is it useless because it's viral? I am fkushed and feeling terrible. I am 65...I did not have a flu shot yet, but had a pneumonia shot about 2 weeks ago. My family came down 2 weeks ago from Manhattan...my granddaughter had walking pneumonia, and both my son and grandson got sick with bronchitis while here...so I was really bombarded with germs. thanks for any help you can give me. I consider this a second opinion since I am basically just fighting this on my own. Help!
