Increased Weight, Stiffness, Swollen Feet Ankles. Bowel Cancer Negative. Reason?

Hi, I am 68 years old female and retired 3 years ago from a job where i was seated all day. On retirement I stopped casual smoking for good, got a rescue dog to walk and have an allotment so am now on my feet and active all day. I eat more healthily now and eat less snacks however i have steadily gained 2 st in weight, have swollen feet and ankles even when weather now cooler some discolouration there and this swelling is now impeding my walking and some stiffness along outside edges of feet also. I have had an MOT for general health and done postal bowel cancer tests negative result there. What might be the cause?

Hi and welcome to HCM .Thanks for the query.
most common causes of legs swelling is heart or kindey disease so this is the first thing to think of. Overweight definitely worsen swelling but it is not primary cause so you need extensive work up to rule out some other conditions. Wish you good health. Regards

General & Family Physician Dr. Jay Patel's  Response
Hi,

Based on the information provided it seems like you are having the issues with kidney or may by liver and that needs to be address.

The liver produces various protein which helps to keep excess of fluid in to the blood vessels as per the principle of osmotic pressure, now if the liver in not producing enough protein then the fluid will flow out of the blood vessel and will appears as an edema in feet/ ankle region due to gravity. If liver is producing then their may be issue with kidney like it may be peeing out most of the protein from blood giving the same issue.

So please have it checked.
Thanks
dr.JAY PATEL.
