grinding of teeth at night is a very common problem, it is habit which is usually present in males, and a number of factors are responsible for this, high stress level is one of them.
continuous grinding of teeth can cause dental issues later on,
if you must have observed, teeth become flat and thin , front teeth look crooked.
but do not worry, a preventive measure called night gaurds are available with the dentist which will prevent your spouse from grinding teeth at night.
It is easy to wear , and will resolve the problem as well, kindly visit your dentist and ask him/her about night gaurd.

I would like to tell you that this problem of night grinding of teeth is known as Bruxism. Its involuntary act seen in many people because of several reasons like:-
-unusual stress
-trauma
-medical ailments or some allergy
It may result in:-
-occlusal trauma
-attrition i.e. wearing away of teeth
-loose teeth & receding gums
It can be treated by treating the etiology & using night guards.
Its nothing to worry about.

Bruxism is night grinding in your sleep.
This is caused by stress, occlusal irregularities, medications etc. You can cause damage to your teeth including occlusal wear, fractures, loosening of teeth, pain, sensitivity, jaw pain, neck pain and lower back pain, headaches and ringning in ears.

This can be helped by going to your dentist and having a hard night guard made. This will help reduce the amount of grinding, it may stop it and it will cut down on the horrible noises you hear at night.

teeth grinding or bruxism is a condition in which people grind their teeth . in some instances people do it when awake too called bruxomania.causative factor may be stress. consult your dentist if the problem persists . he might get you a night guard fabricated

What you are talking about is called as Bruxism or Nigh grinding of teeth.

If your husband is suffering from Bruxism or grinds his teeth during sleep, then there must be underlying cause behind it & should be diagnosed.

Most common cause for night grinding of the teeth is Emotional Stress. Even this grinding can be seen in the school going children who are under stress.

It is also seen in some patients undergoing orthodontic treatment for alignment of the teeth as Mal-occlusion or irregular teeth contact creates stress unknowingly.

But whatever may be the reason , it should be treated immediately so as to prevent damage to teeth.

Use of Night guard which is made by dentist by taking proper impression or measurement of dentition & which is to be worn by patient at night is very important as it prevents direct contact between teeth & thereby giving cushioning effect.

Bruxism can cause wearing or attrition of teeth which makes the teeth sensitive to water or air & then requiring root canal treatment to be done if extensive.

Bruxism also cause vertical bone loss due to force being transmitted to underlying bone followed by making the teeth mobile along with damage to periodontium. If bone loss is severe , then extraction might be necessary.

So visit your dentist & let your husband to undergo thorough clinical examination to know the cause & treatment to be done accordingly.

The symptom you have mentioned is called bruxism or night grinding.

This is caused due to stress and occlusal irregularities.sometimes some medications also cause this.patient does this unknowingly.

This causes damage to your teeth and surrounding structures and

you can visit your dentist and get night guard made for this.

I suppose that your husband had developed habit of bruxism , in which the person grinds his teeth specially in the night. this can be caused by stress , occlusal trauma and medications.
Habit will harm his teeth like wear of tooth surfaces , muscle pain after waking up, and tooth sensitivity.

Visit to Dentist and get checkup done.
Treatment is night guards which will redistribute the dental forces, prevent the wear of the tooth surfaces and will help to stop the habit.
Do follow the instructions given by the dentist properly.

i would suggest you to approach a dentist and get the clinical examination done , if there is any damage to the teeth like occusal wear , attrision , pain and sensitivity in the teeth needs to be treated.

bruxsim can be corrected by applying a prosthesis called as NIGHT GUARD which helps in reducing the severity of the habit .
