Hi & Welcome to HCM.
I can understand your concern for your friend's medications.
Yes, taken along with Levocarb, Azilect is the right medicine for Parkinson's disease.
Azilect (Rasagilin) is a MAO-B inhibitor. It works to prevent the breakdown of Dopamine in the brain. Decreased levels of Dopamine are responsible for many of the symptoms experienced by patients with Parkinson's disease.
Azilect improves many of the movement (or motor) symptoms of Parkinson's like tremor, slowness, stiffness, and trouble walking.
Taken along with Levocarb (Levodopa+Carbidopa), Azilect can help control additional symptoms.
It is also useful to treat “off” time (time when your Levocarb does't work). Adding Azilect to Levocarb has been shown to reduce the amount of “off” time in Parkinson's patients.
Generally, Azilect is well tolerated, its most common side effects seen with flu syndrome, joint pain, depression, and indigestion.
When taken along with Levocarb it can cause swelling of the legs, joint pain, cough, inability to sleep, uncontrolled movements (dyskinesia), accidental injury, weight loss, low blood pressure when standing, abdominal pain, nausea, constipation, dry mouth, rash, abnormal dreams, fall, and swelling of tendons.
She can take Azilect if prescribed by her neurologist and if she develops the side effects her treating doctor should be consulted.
Hope I could answer your query.
