Is BP Of 144/75 Considered Normal?

I m 59 years old just had my blood pressure taken this morning at the doctor s office 145 over 90. I later took it at home with a digital arm monitor and it was 144 over 75 . I m not sure what to make of that they say the bottom number is most important. I jog and hike and lift weights regularly.

Hello,

first of all the first number (145 - and 144 later) is the abnormal one. 90 and 75 are both normal for diastolic blood pressure. Since your blood pressure is borderline, I would recommend you to do a few measurements at home for a week or so to see how it goes. Try to do measurements, only when you're absolutely calm and resting for 10 minutes. Pain, psychological stress, physical activity may bring different results.

You should also try to keep your body weight close to the ideal one, avoid high salt intake and keep exercising.
If after doing the measurements your blood pressure remains high most of the time, then your doctor should evaluate your risk factors for cardiovascular disease and potential target organ damage, in order to decide appropriate treatment. The treatment decisions can sometimes be complicated because a lot of factors may come into play.

I hope you find my comments helpful!
