Is BP Of 156/76 And Pulse Of 72 Normal?

My mother is 85 and we check her blood pressure everyday. This evening, around midnight we took her blood pressure and it was 177/78 and her pulse is 71. When she got up this morning the left side of her neck was bothering her along with the back of her neck. She has been using ben-gay on it today. Tonight she says it is still bothering her pretty bad but she says nothing except for her neck is hurting her. Her blood pressure yesterday was 156/76 and pulse was 72. She is on medication for high blood pressure. She s acting fine. I am worried about her neck and blood pressure. Is this something I should take her to the hospital for? My e-mail is dplus YYYY@YYYY Thank you for your help

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I have read your description and understand your concern.
Blood pressure of 156/78 mmHg and pulse of 72/minute can be considered as normal for your mother, who is aged about 85 years.
However, it would be ideal if her systolic (upper value) blood pressure is maintained at around 140 mmHg.
She could be having issues related to cervical region, which could be manifesting in the form of neck pain.
Kindly take an Orthopedic opinion regarding the same.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
