Is Bactrim Advisable For Diverticulitis?

Can my friend take bactrim da-800 antibiotic for diverticulitis . He can t concentrate to read up on it. He s really in a lot of pain at this moment. He has been diagnosed with it but doesn t have any of the normal antibiotics that are prescribed for it and that s all he has. What other things could he do to decrease the inflammation over the weekend until you get to his doctor on Monday thank you very much in advance. Julie

Yes, he can take bactrim twice daily for mild to moderate diverticulitis. It would be recommended that he also take metronidazole with it (500mg four times a day). In case of severe diverticulitis, intravenous antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, ceftriaxone etc should be given. He should be on a clear liquid diet for the time being. Paracetamol is safe and can be used in maximum allowed dose to treat pain. If pain is not controlled by paracetamol, opioids should be considered but for that, patient needs to see a doctor.
