Is Bactrim The Safe Medication To Treat UTI?

I have been feeling like a UTI. My dr prescribed bactrim. I was afraid to take it. I decided to take Amoxicillin I have 13 pills at 875mg two times a day. I decided to take one today but now I don t know if it was a good idea. Should I continue or is it safe to stop after one pill, or should I continue and how many days. I m due for next dose tonight.

Hi & Welcome.
Both the antibiotics can be used to treat suspected UTI.

Since you do not want to take Bactrim (reason?) you may take Amoxicillin 850 mg twice daily for at least 3-7 days after consulting your treating doctor.

It may cause certain side effects like allergic skin reaction.
It should be discontinued immediately at the first appearance of a skin rash or other signs of hypersensitivity.

Take plenty of oral fluids to maintain good urine out put as it hastens the recovery.

Diabetologist Dr. Nishith R S's  Response
Hi,
Both amoxicillin and bactrim (trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole) are use in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
The difference is bactrim covers more organisms that could cause UTI over Amoxicillin. That might be why your doctor preferred bactrim.
Now, you may continue to take Amoxicillin for 7 days and complete the course. The preferred regimen though is 500mg two times a day for 10 days for mild to moderate infections. But for this the causative organism has to be susceptible for amoxicillin. You can continue if you have the culture and sensitivity report that says the organism is susceptible to amoxicillin.
In the absence of urine culture and sensitivity report, I would have recommended my patient Bactrim over Amoxicillin although Amoxicillin might also be effective.
I hope the above information helps. Do consult your doctor before changing any prescription use. Thanks for writing into healthcaremagic. Have a wonderful day.
