Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
how safe is benicar 20 for blood pressure. I have not taken any prescription meds in a lot of years. I iam 60 years old and my blood pressure is up. I really am a bit nervous about taking blood pressure meds. What is best time to take benicar morning or bed time.
The usual recommended starting dose of Benicar is 20 mg once daily for two weeks, further increase in dose up to 40 mg may be required if BP is not controlled with initial dose.
Generally it is a safe medication, however it may cause fall in BP, dizziness, swelling of the lips, or sometimes dry cough.
The best time to take this medication is at bed time.
Because of the circadian variation in the renin–angiotensin–aldosterone system and its activation during night sleep has been hypothesised to explain the BP lowering effects of bedtime ingestion of angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) medication like Benicar as it affords better 24-hr BP control and greater protection against cardiovascular incidents than the morning time dose.
Hope these answer your query.
