Is Benzonatate Safe To Be Taken For Respiratory Tract Infection During Pregnancy?

My niece is 6 months pregnant and was diagnosed with respiratory tract infection, her Doctor told her to drink Tea and lots of fluids. She is coughing up a storm. I had bronchitis and was given Benzonatate for the cough, can she take any drug like that for the cough?

Hi,

Benzonatate is a non-narcotic oral cough suppressant or antitussive agent. It acts somewhat like a local anaesthetic, decreasing the sensitivity of stretch receptors in the lower airway and lung, thereby reducing the drive to cough.

During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed as it falls under the FDA's Pregnancy Category C. You need to seek medical attention by consulting your doctor before consuming it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
