Is Betamethasone Prescribed To Prevent Fetal Lung Immaturity At Birth?

My wife is prescribed with two doses of betamethasone (12mg) of each within 24hours, when she is in 34 th week of pregnancy, doctor said its for lungs maturity of the baby. But I did not see any direct ref. for this. Could you please make your comment on usage of betamethasone (12mg)X2 usage?
