Is Ciprofloxacin Advisable To Treat Bacteria In The Semen?

I have to kinds of bacteria that were found in my semen... pseudomonas fluorescens/putida group and moderate growth of enterococcus facecalis. I was prescribed ciprofloxacin HCL 500 mg. Is there a safer antibotic that I can use? I am concerned about side effects due to me have light joint pain normally and am concerned it can affect me. What do you think is best?

Hello,
Thank you for asking at HCM.

I carefully read your question and understand your concern.

The antibiotics prescribed are generally chosen based on the results of the cultures we do. In your case you have done a semen culture so with the results of the bacteria present should have the list of the antibiotics that are effective. It seems ciprofloxacine is one of them as the doctor has prescribed it.
On the other hand ciprofloxacine is generally a well tolerated medication. The problem with the joint pains are mostly a concern in children up to 18 years old due to accumulation in the growing bone so adults are not prone to this side effect. So what I will recommend is:
1. if your doctor prescribed ciprofloxacine out of the culture results and you are not allergic to it you can take it, no concerns with joint pain
2. If you really do not want it than ask your doctor which are the rest of the antibiotics that are effective according to the results of the culture and decide which is the one that you would prefer considering the way of administration (oral vs injectable), and side effects.

Hope this is helpful and answers to your question

Best Regards,

Dr Antoneta
