Is Clonidine Safe For Children Suffering From Insomnia?

I have a 7 year old grandchild that his mother has put him on this drug clonidine 0.2 mg for a sleeping disorder is this safe for him. He has stayed over night with us and we have never had a problem with him going to sleep. But his mother and father has separated since 28 Feb 2018 and we kind of think she has put this child on this medication to put him to sleep.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Clonidine can be used in treatment of sleep.disorder in children. But this should be under the guidance of pediatrician only. The dosage depends on weight of the child. If he seems to fall asleep without clonidine, then discuss with his doctor regarding discontinuing the medication.
