Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Clostridium Difficile Infection A Contagious Disease?
My mother has c-diff, and is receiving treatment. She is still not feeling good, and can only tolerate a bland diet. She no longer has frank diarrhea, but passes a little stool every time she urinates. We are scheduled for a Caribbean cruise in two weeks. We are sharing a tiny cabin with one bathroom. One, is she still contagious to me, sharing a bathroom? Two, how about the other people on the ship- buffet food...? I am healthy, not on any antibiotics. And my mom is extremely careful about washing her hands. Thank you for any assistance.
Hello there. The answer to your question is, Yes! Clostridium difficile infection is contagious. Microorganisms can be spread from person-to-person by touch or by direct contact with contaminated objects and surfaces (for example, clothing, cell phones, door handles). Avoiding direct and indirect physical contact with contaminated areas reduces the likelihood of contagion.
