Is Cod Liver Oil Tablets Advisable During Pregnancy?

Helo Doctor, I was planning for pregnancy next month and was taking sea cod liver oil tablets 600 mg daily from past 1 month. Suddenly today I realise I missed by period and am pregnant. Is this harmful to the fetus. I see lot of posts online saying it harmful and some says is good to take. Please suggest. I am stressed and tensed now. Regards, Lalitha

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic.
I have gone through your query.

Cod liver oil is a rich source of vitamin A and omega fatty acids. Generally cod liver oil is not recommended in pregnancy, because it contain high level retinol form vitamin-A,excessive amount of vitamin-A may cause harm to your baby.
You can use fish oil instead of cod liver oil which contain only omega fattyacids not retinol.
I suggest you to consult a dietitian before taking food supplements.
Sit back and relax.Have a stress free time.

i hope this information helps.
Wishing you all the best.
