Is Coreg Advisable While Having Low BP?

Would Coreg be a safe med to take for a person who has a 60 HR and low BP but trying to reduce the pressure of idiopathic hypertensive portal vein? This patient suffers from CLL, thyroid, gout and varices due to the portal vein. This patient has no history of high BP.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi & Welcome.
Coreg is not advisable while having a low BP.

Coreg (Carvedilol) is a mixed or combined alpha and beta blocker used to treat high BP and some selected cases of compensated heart failure.

It is not approved for the treatment of either idiopathic portal hypertension or portal hypertension associated with cirrhosis of the liver because of the safety concerns.

However, for the treatment and prevention of idiopathic portal hypertension a non selective beta blocker like Propranolol or Nodolol is found to be effective and hence can be used after consulting the treating physician.

For the treatment of esophageal varices, a drug like Octreotide or endoscopic ligation is the preferred treatment.

Hope to have answered your query.
