Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My AST(SGOT) blood test result reading was 56, last year it was 28. I questioned my doc (via email) if this was something I should worry about. A response from her nurse say that I was already on lovastatin, doc recommended changing to crestor. Aren t these drugs for cholesterol.....do they effect the liver?
It is not advisable to take while having elevated SGOT levels (suggestive of liverinjury).
Statins like crestor and lovostatin are commonly prescribed to lower the high blood cholesterol levels.
Generally well tolerated however, their more common side effects include muscle and joint aches, gastrointestinal disturbance and liver dysfunction or injury (which is reflected in the form of high SGOT levels).
I advise you to stop taking these medications and ask your doctor for an alternate effective but a safer medication like colesevlam for the cholesterol lowering effects.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
