Is Cryselle As Effective As Elinest?

I have been taking the birth control pill Elinest for about a year. I picked up my refill for the next three months today but instead of getting Elinest like I normally do I got Cryselle. I was not informed of the switch prior to the pick up and I didnt realize it was a completely different medication until I got home. Are the two medicines similar in how they work and should I have been notified about the switch?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi

Both the drugs are combined oral pills. Elinest and Cryselle contain the same active ingredients and same amounts of ethinyl estradiol and norgestrel to help prevent pregnancy.

Elinest and Cryselle can be switched between one another and other brand names containing the same active ingredients.

But their inactive ingredients may differ and they may not be bio-equivalent. Hence I would suggest you to use another method of contraception such as barrier method(condom) during the first week of
drug switch.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
