Is Dexa Scan Recommended For Osteopenia?

I was told that I may have Osteopenia and I should have a Dexa scan done. As of lately, I am having pain in my right knee as well as in my right hip. The pain comes and goes. Some days are worse then others. I am so afraid that if a bone cracks I may fall and wind up breaking my hip or leg. What can I do to stop this condition from getting worse? Thank you for your help.

Hi,

Osteopenia is a condition, where bones are weaker than normal and these may have fractures more easily than expected. Pain in the hip joint, knee joint or low back pain may be the presenting symptoms. Dexa scan is a reliable method for measuring the bone density.

If your bone density is lower than normal for your age and sex, it is known as osteopenia and it indicates a risk for osteoporosis and easy fracture. Dexa scan is a high precision type of X-ray, that measures the bone mineral density and bone loss and hence is a valuable tool for diagnosing the condition of osteopenia.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
