Is Diazepam Advisable For Sleeplessness?

I am flying to South Africa which is a 14 1/2 hour plane ride. I have difficulty sleeping on airplanes so it was recommended by the tour guide that I get a mild sleep enhancer for the trip. What would be a good recommendation? Would Diazepam 5mg work or is there something else that would be more effective.

Hello,

Diazepam is effective in producing sleep and relieving anxiety, so it should be effective for your purpose. We don't usually recommend, it because it has the potential to create dependence but since in this case, it's a question of taking it for one time only it is a valid alternative. Lorazepam is another benzodiazepine which you may consider as it stays for a shorter time in your system. If you want to try something from another class with less potential for abuse, I might also recommend Zolpidem which also is effective to promote sleep with a duration of action of about seven hours.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Olsi Taka
