Is ELISA Test Done After 45 Days Of Exposure Conclusive?
Hello Dr Andrew Rynne,
i am really concerned about my HIV status. althought i rarely have sex , let alone unprotected sex, my intoxication seemed to break that judgement a few months ago after having unprotective sex with a gay male top whom's HIV status i was unsure of. 4-5 weeks after possible exposure i went to my local clinic where i was given a full HIV/STD test. the nurse informed me that the test that was used was a ELISA test that was accurate for 21-45 days after exposure. all of my results for both HIV and other STD's came back negative. but i am still concerned, as i have looked into ELISA testing and it is said it can take as long as 3 months to detect infection. with that being said, i am going to get retested in next month which will mark9 weeks since possible infection. my only concern is my anxiety and fear of test coming back negative. Do you think my first test was somewhat accurate?
Thanks for your query at HCM! In your case only 45 days have passed so you cannot be so sure until 6 months post-exposure your test come negative. ELISA test only antibodies which take time to appear in blood. I suggest as you are in window period p24 antigen combo test done and get tested again after 6 months for both antigen/antibodies. Take care!
