Is EpiPen Safe For A Child?

My son is 11, finishing 5th grade. His school wants parents to sign a form permitting or not permitting the use of an EpiPen. A school nurse works full time but there s no professional coverage when she is off. My son has no allergies except a mild rash to penicillin after receiving it for a long time following appendicitis. I declined permission and the nurse is questioning why. Should I give permission?

Hi,

Yes, it is quite safe for children. EpiPen (epinephrin) is a life saving medication commonly used to treat allergic reactions to insect stings/bites, foods, drugs, or other substances which can be fatal (anaphylaxis).

Since your child could be exposed to many more allergens at school, hence to combat the allergic reactions EpiPen is found to be very effective and safe in children. You may please give the permission for its use as and when required.

Hope I have answered your queries. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
