Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I recently had blood work done and my ggt came back as 400. I drink fairly often and have been cutting back every few days to avoid withdrawal symptoms. I m wondering if it would be wise to take time off work to get this sorted out? And if it s possible I ve already seriously harmed my liver? I hope it s not too late. Thank you
Hi, Thanks for posting in HCM. GGT is Gamma Glutamyl Transferase enzyme. It is an inducible enzyme of liver. It is considered as a marker for alcoholic liver disease. In your case, value of 400 U/L is very high and indicates that the liver damage has been taking place for quite sometime due to toxic effects of alcohol. To know the extent of damage and status of the liver, you need to get an ultrasound abdomen scan. It is advisable to stop alcohol completely as you may go in for complications such as cirrhosis of liver and complete liver failure. Kindly consult Gastroenterologist for management in this regard. Hope the information provided would be helpful. All the best.
