Hello and welcome to HCM,
Gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) is one of the liver enzymes.
GGT level is interpreted along with other liver function tests.
Elevation of GGT level suggests that there is some disorder of bile ducts.
Bile ducts are the structures which drain the bile from liver to intestine.
GGT is usually elevated along with
alkaline phosphatase (ALP).
Both ALP and GGT are elevated in disorders of bile duct or biliary tree.
It may be due to obstruction or
alcoholism.
Elevated GGT is usually associated with alcoholism.
As you have mentioned that you have been diagnosed with
fatty liver 10 years back, it is likely that elevated GGT is also due to alcoholism.
Alcohol is known to cause fatty liver and elevated GGT level.
Thus, for reversal of fatty liver and lowering of GGT level, abstinence of alcohol is required.
Fatty liver is reversible initially but once it progresses to
hepatitis and cirrhosis, it becomes irreversible.
I suggest you to get a fresh
ultrasound to know the current status of liver.
Thanks and take care
