Is Gabapentin Advisable To Treat Sciatic Nerve Pain?

I have sciatic nerve pain and I m 61 yrs old. I got this when I played basketball after 2 years not playing. My family doctor gave me antiflammatory and pain relievers but still in pain coz of my work as a machine operator. After 2 hours constant standing I already feel the pain on my buttocks down to my Legs. Somebody told me to taka gabapentim and the doctor prescribed me 300 mg 2 x a day to try it. What do you think is it okay to try it?

Physical Therapist or Physiotherapist 's  Response
Hello,

As mentioned in history about sciatica I think you have lumbar radiculopathy. This happens due to degenerative changes in the disc of the lumbar spine and leads to compression of the nerve roots leading to sciatica as a symptom.

Taking the proper medicine by the physician prescribed and also some basic exercise to strengthen the core, back and hip muscles should help you much better.

In fact, in my 12 years of experience, I have been seeing cases with lumbar radiculopathy with sciatic symptoms and all have responded well with exercise and medication. A need to assess the muscle groups need attention always provide a better outcome score.

For exercise prescription, you can meet up a physiotherapist who can assess the weaker muscles and teach you the exercises exactly needed for the best outcome score.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
