Is HIV Infection Possible Even Through Protected Sex?

Hi, may I answer your health queries right now ? Please type your query here...Hello Doctor. I had protected sex with male latex condom with two prostitutes on 2nd and 4th September, 2010. After 8 days I am very much scared about HiV infection so I have read too many articles on net about early symptoms of hiv infection. After that I am feeling tiredness and feeling sleepy all the time like fatigue. This is the only symptom I have faced till 22nd sept. I have chatted with my family doctor and he has advised me not to worry and give me some antidepressant medicine. Is these symptom due to my over worrying about hiv infection or should i go for test ?

Hello. Thank you for writing to us at healthcaremagic

Protected sex is safe in terms of HIV. The virus usually enters through minute tears sustained on the genital mucosa during sex.
Protected sex with a condom usually covers all of the genital mucosa in males and therefore there is no direct contact with the virus.
Skin on the other hand is too hardy for HIV virus to enter through it, therefore even thought the skin of the shaft and base of penis may come in direct contact with vaginal secretions during sex, the virus cannot enter through.
The symptoms that you are experiencing are non-specific and seem to suggest a flu-like illness.
Nevertheless, there is no harm in getting yourself tested for HIV for your own peace of mind.
Screening test for HIV can be done earliest at 1 month as most of the HIV infected individuals develop circulating antibodies by 1 month.
If screening test is negative, it should be repeated again at 3 months. The purpose of repeat testing is to cover for the window period of HIV detection by antibody screening test. This is taken as conclusive.

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

HIV is not transmitted usually through condoms. When used consistently and correctly, condoms are highly effective in preventing HIV. They are also effective at preventing STDs transmitted through body fluids, like gonorrhea, chlamydia, and HIV. However, they provide less protection against STDs spread through skin-to-skin contact like human papillomavirus (genital warts), genital herpes, and syphilis.

Only risk of HIV transmission with protected sex is if you do not use condoms properly or the condoms leak. For peace of mind you can take a HIV test and I re assure you it will be negative.
