Is HbA1c Level Of 6.9 A Cause For Concern?

My doctor wants to put me on Victoza. Currently on Januvia and Metformin. My A1C was 6.9 and it was down from last year. I am losing weight. Don t want another high priced Diabetes II drug. Plus it is an injectable. I said that I would think about it.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Your idea is very right, diabetes management should be individualized. The cost of victoza is really high and we do not recommend it in patients who are not obese.

Your HBAic is not very high, our aim is 6.5, but up to 7 is acceptable. So what I understand, you may continue your drugs, or increase the dose if not maximum already, and do more diet and exercises and wait for 3 months.

If still HBAic was high, then we can think about it, but at the moment I don't think you need it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
